Why do we use Comfrey in our Re Leaf – Comfrey Balm?
It is important to understand the history of using natural remedies when you are trying to understand their formulations. People have used Comfrey as an alternative remedy for joint and muscle pain as well as closed wounds for centuries. First, it is interesting to note that Comfrey (also known as Symphytum officinale) acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that promotes healing of bruises, sprains, and open wounds when applied topically. The roots and leaves of this plant contain a protein called allantoin, which stimulates cell proliferation and promotes wound and bone healing. In order to prepare this balm, we infuse organic Comfrey leaves in organic olive oil for 4-6 weeks. Next, we filter the oil infusion and combine it with the remaining ingredients resulting in a topical balm that is easy to apply and has a soothing natural scent.
Research suggests that Comfrey can even help many types of joint and muscle pain. These uses include, osteoarthritis, as well as some injuries, such as ankle sprains, back pain, and even headaches. Applying a Comfrey ointment to the affected area for up to 2 weeks improves mobility, decreases pain, and reduces tenderness and swelling of sprains. It’s interesting to note that the efficacy of applying Comfrey ointment to relieve pain and reduce swelling is somewhat comparable to the efficacy of diclofenac gel. Studies also suggest this type of balm can provide relief (“re-leaf”) when applied to patients with upper and lower back pain, or even for sufferers of headaches when massaged onto temples and neck. So next time you feel sore, reach for Re Leaf Comfrey Balm for your pain and find relief!
